Evolving the practice of placemaking
A design, build and manager of public ‘meanwhile spaces’ in London, most notably South London’s Pop Brixton and Peckham Levels.
Pioneers in social change, the management team, investors, The Collective and architect, Carl Turner approached Champion to name and create a brand for the parent company of Pop Brixton, its visual and verbal identity, and to develop a cohesive set of guidelines with assets that could be easily implemented across multiple sites.
The name needed to be versatile, own-able and quickly understood without any ambiguity. The identity for the chosen name had to reflect the brand’s positive, pop-up nature and be versatile enough for anyone to use, with the Make Shift name emerging early on in the process. We avoided any complicated or expensive iterations of the identity; with the materials used incorporated from dye-cut waste from the site.
The brands identity and the Make Shift launch was a success, with the team gaining traction in acquiring more meanwhile spaces across more London boroughs.
